Dr. Yolanda Mahnke is the founder of FlowKnowHow LLC, a consulting company focusing on flow cytometry, immunology, and clinical trials. She became a leader in flow cytometry over the course of her research career, which took her from the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg, Germany, to the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research in Lausanne, Switzerland, on to the Vaccine Research Center of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD, and finally to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, PA. Her work revolved around investigating the immune system in health (twins) and disease (infectious diseases and oncology, including CART-cells) in mice and men, co-developing a highly sensitive flow cytometry-based cytotoxicity assay and developing many multi-parameter panels to study clinical trial samples, while also seeking a deeper understanding of the flow cytometry technology and improving techniques. This culminated in setting standards for panel development and optimization, as well as co-development of the OMIP publication platform, of which she remains the Senior Associate Editor at Cytometry Part A. She was awarded the Marylou Ingram Scholarship from the International Society for the Advancement of Cytometry (ISAC) in 2014, and remains an active member in ISAC’s committees and taskforces.
