Full Professor at the Schools of Biological Sciences and Medicine of the P. Universidad Católica de Chile and a Doctor of Microbiology and Immunology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York. Postdoctoral fellow at Albert Einstein and the Rockefeller University. Visiting Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the University of Nantes, France, the University of Iowa, Aristotle University, and Rockefeller University. He has given over 400 national and international conferences, published 346 scientific articles, and trained hundreds of young scientists. He received the Avonni National Innovation Award, the Andres Bello University Merit Award, the World Intellectual Property Organization Gold Medal, the Abdón Cifuentes Award that honors scientists with an impact on public policy, the Avonni Award for Innovative Career, and the Image Spirit Award from Chile. He directs the Millennium Institute for Immunology and Immunotherapy, a center of excellence in international translational science. He acts as an advisor in government and legislative commissions, as a member of the Scientific Advisory Council of the ICGEB (a UN Organization), the Presidential Advisory Council for Science, Technology, Knowledge, and Innovation of Chile, and the Advisory Council for the Directorate For Science, Technology And Innovation-Committee For Scientific And Technological Policy, OECD. He directed the studies of one of the safest COVID-19 vaccines. This work led to the supply of necessary doses for the mass vaccination campaign in several countries, contributing to the COVID-19 pandemic control. His team's RSV vaccine was recently approved for clinical development within the European Community.
